Frequently Asked Questions About CBD
Q: What is CBD?
A: CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of over 100 naturally occurring cannabinoids or compounds found in the resinous flower of cannabis plants. While we may typically associate cannabis with getting high, CBD is non-intoxicating, non-addictive and can be used in many types of products. The fact that CBD is therapeutically potent as well as non-intoxicating and easy to take, makes it an appealing treatment option for those who are cautious about trying cannabis for the first time.
Q: How does CBD work?
A: CBD interacts with our bodies in a variety of ways. One of the main ways it impacts us is by mimicking and augmenting the effects of the compounds in our bodies called “endogenous cannabinoids” - so named because of their similarity to the compounds found in the cannabis plant. These “endocannabinoids” are part of a regulatory system called the “endocannabinoid system” or ECS. The discovery of the endocannabinoid system has significantly advanced our understanding of health and disease.
The ECS plays a crucial role in regulating a broad range of physiological processes that affect our mood, energy level, intestinal fortitude, immune activity, blood pressure, bone density, glucose metabolism, how we experience pain, stress, hunger, and more. Modern science has shown ECS abnormalities in nearly all pathological conditions. Therefore, it stands to reason that by modulating the endocannabinoid system, CBD can augment the bodies own natural healing powers.
Q: Which product should I choose?
A: At CBD East Main, we carry a variety of hemp derived products designed to deliver premium quality CBD to your body. Our products are sourced from top-quality USA grown hemp producers in three varieties: Full Spectrum, Broad Spectrum and Isolates.
Pure and unadulterated, Full Spectrum products contain everything from the hemp plant including CBD, other cannabinoids, terpenes and chlorophyll. Full Spectrum products do contain trace amounts of THC but do not exceed 0.3% and do not produce the psychoactive effect typically associated with marijuana.
Broad Spectrum products offer the entire minor cannabinoid and terpene entourage without the THC. Through a variety of processes, the THC is removed from the oil. Broad Spectrum products give the user a full minor cannabinoid and terpene effect without any risk of ingesting THC. Some producers will refer to their Broad Spectrum products as Phyto-Cannabinoid Rich or PCR.
Isolate products are produced by isolating only the CBD compound and removing all the minor cannabinoids, terpenes and chlorophyll. Isolate products are ideal for acute symptom relief with fast onset times. Neither Broad Spectrum nor Isolate products contain any of the trace amount of THC found in Full Spectrum products.
Scientific studies show that CBD and THC work best in combination and potentiate each other’s therapeutic effects. At CBD East Main, we always recommend trying a Full Spectrum product unless the user is concerned about failing a drug test.
Q: Will I fail a drug test?
A: Yes, you may fail a drug test even if you experience no mood-altering affects from your CBD product. Drug tests are designed to identify THC, not CBD or another cannabinoid. If one medicates with a full spectrum CBD product that has a small amount of THC, the THC may register on the drug test. To avoid this, we recommend using a broad spectrum or isolate product which will not contain any THC.
Q: Does CBD interact with other medications?
A: Yes. CBD inhibits the cytochrome P450 enzyme, which is involved in metabolizing many drugs. Compounds in grapefruit inhibit the same enzyme group, which is why physicians advise patients not to eat grapefruit shortly before or after taking certain medications. Through this inhibition of cytochrome P450, CBD can either reduce or increase the effects of other drugs. In some situations, it may be advisable for a physician to monitor a patient’s blood levels of other medications while taking CBD.
Q: Will CBD make me sleepy?
A: Moderate doses of CBD are mildly energizing or alerting. But very high doses of CBD may trigger a biphasic effect and can promote sleepiness. If a CBD product confers a sedating effect, it’s likely because of a myrcene or nerolidol rich terpene profile. Myrcene and nerolidol are terpenes with calming and painkilling properties that can occur naturally in the cannabis plant. Also, while CBD is not intrinsically sedating, but it may help to restore better sleeping patterns by reducing anxiety.
Q: Will CBD make me high?
A: Unlike THC, CBD is not intoxicating. Why? Both THC and CBD are cannabinoids, but they behave very differently in our bodies. THC stimulates what are called CB1 receptors. When CB1 receptors are activated, humans generally experience feelings of euphoria or, for some, anxiety or even paranoia. CBD doesn’t activate CB1 receptors, so we don’t feel euphoric, anxious, or high when taking it. In fact, CBD can actually reduce THC’s ability to stimulate CB1 receptors, helping to block some of THC’s not-so-fun side effects. For those prone to anxiety and forgetfulness when consuming cannabis, CBD is a good tool to keep on-hand.
